Here's one of the hundreds of myths that are corrected: "MYTH: Even if the school does not require the SAT I, you should take it anyway, as a sign that you are committed to learning. TRUTH: If a school does not requires the SAT I, only send your scores if they are excellent and/or better than your transcript would predict." [Page 114]

The chapter on financial aid explains, among other things, how to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and the FAFSA calendar for application, state residency requirements, and other details.

If you are trying to get a scholarship, be sure to read the section on scams. To mention just a few, the offer is probably a scam if the scholarship organization requires any application fee, or if a scholarship database search service charges a fee more than $50, or if any office has a telephone number that begins with area code 900. [Page 221]

Applicants are sometimes required to write essays. Look at an essay written by a student who was subsequently rejected [176]. At first the essay seems to be excellent, but the student left out a remark that the admissions office wanted to see included.

Prepare yourself by going through the sample questions from college applications [134-135], various personal questions that the college may ask you [136], and the college visit worksheets [77-82].

If you have to pay fees to take entrance exams, see if you are eligible for a fee waiver [122].

A seven page calendar describes exactly what you should be doing each month, from September of your sophomore year in high school, when you should register to take the PSAT, through June of your senior year, when you should have the high school office send your final transcript to one or more colleges. [22-28].

The person writing this book review has attended four colleges. I graduated from three degree curricula, in electrical engineering and secondary education, and took additional credits in another nonmatriculated program. I see with certainty that this book is packed with crucial information that every student preparing to go to college must have.

Book Description from the Publisher

  • The inside story on applying early and increasing your chances of early acceptance
  • The most common essay and interview mistakes
  • Why some colleges are better for you than the Ivy League
  • The question you must ask before you choose a college

Did you know that:

  • Some glowing letters of recommendation can hurt your chances of admission
  • Working your way through high school can be more appealing to an admissions officer than a long list of extracurricular activities
  • The right strategy for negotiating the college admissions process makes the difference between acceptance and rejection, regardless of your grades

The truths and myths about getting into the top schools from a private college counselor who has placed 75% of her clients in the Ivy League, as well as the most competitive colleges in the country.

If you're getting ready for the college admissions process, you need this book. It used to be that a college applicant with a great SAT score and high grade-point average was easily accepted into a first-choice college. Not anymore. These days it takes an outstanding application, too. The extracurricular activities or "brag" sheet, the personal essay, and the interview all weigh heavily in the acceptance process.

As a private college admissions counselor, Dr. Katherine Cohen has placed a great majority of her clients in their first-choice colleges. Now, for the first time, Dr. Cohen offers her successful program in a book complete with work-sheets, timeliness and checklists to help students demystify the college admissions process and get into that dream college.

Divided into chapters that cover everything from what courses to take in high school to how to ace that all-important interview, this book is the college admissions bible for students and parents.
